Christian Berg är Sveriges ledande Cubist skulptör. Han bosatte sig i Paris 1922 och fördjupade sig med avant-garde. Från 1926 började han arbeta i ett kubistiskt sätt under inflytande av den franska kubister Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque, skulptören Alexander Archipenko, Andre Lhote under vilka han utbildade samt Fernand Leger med hans principer Purism.
På 1920-talet medan de arbetade i Paris Berg fortsatte att skapa några riktigt lysande skulpturer som fångar alla kärnan i Paris under den tiden, som står ensamma som internationell konst. Kritikern Maurice Raynal skrev år 1928 att hans skulpturer var förnuftigt intelligent. Även Jacque Fouquet igen 1928, skrev: Berg ständigt utvärderar ibland söker efter den fullständiga avstående för motivet, med hjälp av lysande linjer för att fånga rörelse och form .. resulterar i ädla och eleganta arbeten
"Från och med år 1926, tillhörde Christian Berg till en krets av unga svenska avantgarde-konstnärer som representeras funktionalistiska och ideal konstruktivistiskt i sitt arbete ... i 1926 han avrättades hans första mogna verk i modern stil efter en period av intensiva studier i Paris ... Efter en förvånansvärt snabb utveckling, effekten av intensiv modellstudie i mönstret efter en kort vistelse i den ateljé Andre Lhote började han arbeta under våren 1926 med lättnad problem ... Det första av dessa åtgärders är en enkel studie av en kvinnas rygg (Torso-Relief 1926) där en starkt rytmisk kvalitet är vidarebefordras till en naturlig motiv som behåller sin "kroppsliga" sinnlighet. Men även på detta tidiga stadium var han försökte ersätta negativa former för positiva sådana, för att bryta hegemonin av ytan under lättnad genom att bygga ut sin volym i båda riktningar .. Han visade sig kunna närma Archipenko eller Brancusi, betalade han särskild uppmärksamhet åt expressiva värden för positiva och negativa form. "

Christian Berg is Sweden’s leading Cubist sculptor. He settled in Paris in 1922 and immersed himself with the avant-garde. From the 1926 he began to work in a Cubist manner under the influence of the French Cubists Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque, the sculptor Alexander Archipenko, Andre Lhote under whom he trained as well as Fernand Leger with his principles of Purism. In the 1920’s whilst working in Paris Berg went on to create some truly brilliant sculptures that capture all the essence of Paris during that time, that stand alone as international works of art. The critic Maurice Raynal wrote in 1928 that his sculptures were sensibly intelligent. Whilst Jacque Fouquet, again in 1928, wrote: Berg constantly is evaluating sometimes looking for the complete renunciation for the motif, using brilliant lines to capture the movement and the form.. resulting in noble and elegant works
“From the year 1926, Christian Berg belonged to a circle of young Swedish avant-garde artists who represented functionalist and constructivist ideals in their work… in 1926 he executed his first mature works in a modern style after a period of intensive study in Paris… After an astonishingly rapid development, the effect of intensive model study in design after a short stay in the atelier of Andre Lhote, he began working in the spring of 1926 with relief problems… The earliest of these relief’s is a simple study of a woman’s back (Torso –Relief 1926) in which a strongly rhythmic quality is imparted to a natural motif which retains its “bodily” sensuousness. But even at this early stage, he was attempting to substitute negative forms for positive ones, to break the hegemony of the surface over the relief by building out his volume in both directions.. he showed himself capable of approaching Archipenko or Brancusi, he paid especial attention to the expressive values of the positive and negative form.”
